SMOKE AND MIRRORS

Painting, Isolation and Tradition

Eastern Southland Gallery, Gore

Smoke and Mirrors showcases three Dunedin-based artists working primarily in the medium of paint; Peter Cleverley, Michael Greaves and Anya Sinclair.

The exhibition highlights three individual and in-depth practices, generating questions, definitions and meaning, exploring the role of painting today and contributing to the ever-evolving practice that is contemporary painting. Peter Cleverley’s work includes his use of large dog imagery, religious symbolism, pictures of ethnic tribal figures, and skull and cross bones portrayed in a jarring manner. Michael Greaves mixed media works take us on a journey from one side of the globe to the other, literally. Anya Sinclair’s work is mystical and enchanting introducing a new use of colour giving the works an unnerving yet beautiful quality.

Admission free. Gallery Hours: Monday to Friday 10am – 4.30pm, Weekends and Public Holidays 1-4pm.
