Mayoral Message and Welcome from Tracy Hicks

Welcome to the Gore website which profiles many aspects of our wonderful District. Those who reside in the Gore District choose to make their home in a special part of the country which offers a lifestyle second to none.

The Gore District Council team is proud to add to the quality and range of services on offer. There is a superb line up of attractions for visitors young and old to indulge in, ranging from fishing for brown trout in the world renowned Mataura River, viewing our vibrant arts and heritage sector or indulging in playtime at some of our world class recreational facilities.

Our landscape is dominated by the Hokonui hills which, many years ago, were home to illicit moonshine whisky distilling during the prohibition era. The colourful history of this illegal activity has been captured at the Hokonui Moonshine Museum through re creations, audio-visuals and original artefacts. Gore is well located for those wishing to take day trips to Fiordland, a world heritage park and the southern playgrounds of Queenstown and Wanaka.

Come and visit us in the Gore District – you will get a welcome that is second to none.
