Solid Energy continues progressing projects to develop new and innovative technologies to increase the value of lignite.
The company previously secured 1.5 billion tonnes of recoverable lignite reserve in Eastern Southland and started a detailed exploration programme to increase Solid Energy’s knowledge of the Croydon resource in September 2010.
The company plans to use GTL Energy technology for a briquette demonstration plant, producing up to 90,000 tonnes a year of low-moisture and higher-energy briquettes from about 150,000 tonnes of lignite from its New Vale Mine for New Zealand and export thermal coal markets. Resource consents for this demonstration plant were lodged with us in late February for consideration.
Solid Energy is also continuing to progress its project to convert lignites to fertiliser. The initial concept study, completed jointly with fertiliser company Ravensdown, confirmed the attractiveness of a plant producing 1.2 million tonnes of urea (500,000 tonnes for New Zealand markets and the remainder for export). Other plant size options are also being considered.
The company also continues to develop options for New Zealand to meet its transport fuel needs by producing fuel from lignite at a local facility in Southland. Technology evaluation is underway and the company expects to select its preferred technology route for this by the end of 2011.
